We’re going to share a moment here together— the three of us. You, me and your dream … Let's Chat
IT’S HALFTIME – WHERE ARE YOUR GOALS?
Well, we just completed the first half of the year. Just as you would in a great sporting event, you need to take a little halftime to recoup, gather your thoughts, check your strategies, focus and get ready to start kicking some ass in the second half.
Consider this blog to be that proverbial halftime.
At the beginning of this year you probably had a list of goals that you wanted to accomplish in both your practice and your life. How is it going? Give yourself an honest assessment here…don’t fool yourself.
Are you really where you want to be? To be forthright, only about 5% of the people reading this could truly answer yes to that question. Are you one of them? If not, why aren’t you? What do you need to change?
Allow me to give you some direction.
Here are 5 things you MUST assess immediately:
- How is the strength of your staff right now? Are they an asset to your mission or are they a liability? If they are not a strength, why aren’t they? Is it a training issue or a personnel issue?
- How are your daily, weekly and monthly goal-setting habits and procedures? What’s that? You don’t have any? Better get hot and fast.
- What are your other daily habits like? Eating healthy? Exercising? Praying, meditating or spending time in silence? Affirmations and visualizing? Sleep habits? Too much TV? What are you doing?
- Do you have an effective, CONSTANT, marketing wheel going? If you don’t, just give up on your goals now. Seriously.
- Is your vision of what you want for your life strong enough to drive you to succeed on a daily basis? If your answers to numbers 1-4 suck, then the answer to this question is no. Go back and figure out what drives you. Create a vision that will burn in your soul.
For me, I am salivating at the thought of what the second half of this year will bring. My goal is to beat what I did in the first half of the year by 25%. Lofty? Maybe. But I assure you it is a goal that will drive me like a locomotive to achieve it.
How about you? I recommend you challenge yourself. Try and beat your first half of the year by 10, 20 or 30%…whatever number is right for you. Just add up whatever you brought in the first half of the year, add X% to it and go for that number in the second half.
That’s the easy part. The harder part of the equation is you MUST make your actions worthy of that goal. Go to bed and get up earlier. Watch less TV. Study more. Read more. Pray more. Write your daily goals, daily! Do what it takes to make it happen.
Quit looking out over the horizon waiting for the Calvary to come and save your ass. The Calvary ain’t coming! Save yourself. Be your own hero. Work hard enough to make it happen.
Yesterday is dead and gone.
Tomorrow is too far away.
The time is RIGHT NOW!!!
“When you believe passionately in that which does not exist, you create it.”
This is one of my favorite quotes and if you’ve never heard it before, it should become one of yours too. Why? Because if you read deep into it and apply what it says, it could truly change your life. It is in believing passionately that we stir our dreams into action, and it is only by applying action to our dreams that we will ever see them come to fruition. So I ask you, what do you passionately want to see come into existence in your life? And I mean PASSIONATELY! What burns your belly everyday? What do you get out of bed thinking about, what steals your attention numerous times throughout the day and what has a permanent residence in your dreams at night?
You see, this isn’t like The Secret. Don’t get me wrong, I loved The Secret and believe it’s great and inspirational reading for anyone. However, I think too many people walked away from reading or watching it thinking that all they have to do is keep wishing for something and it will magically appear. I don’t blame Rhonda Byrne, the author of The Secret for that…it’s the quick fix mentality that is rampant in our society. I see it in my practice everyday. People come in with health problems that they have had for years, and they want it to go away in two days, without having to change anything in their life to accomplish it. I’m here to tell you that no matter what your desires are, it doesn’t work that way!
So let’s examine this. How can we create the life of our dreams? First of all, you’d better know what your dreams are. After all, how can you be chasing a better life and a more fulfilling existence if you can’t even define what that means to you? It has to be clear, and I mean crystal clear, in no uncertain terms what you want. I’m telling you straight, if you are unhappy with any area of your life, this is the number one problem. It’s not the only one, but it’s the main one. Because if you know in your heart of hearts what you want, and you believe passionately that it will happen for you, it will. Not by some sort of osmosis, or magic, that’s not what I’m saying. When you want something badly enough, to the point that it consumes your every thought (in a healthy way), you will have the energy, you will have the desire and you will have the resolve to do whatever is necessary to make it happen.
Once you have pinpointed what your passionate desire is, you can now put into play the second part of the equation, action. YOU MUST TAKE MASSIVE ACTION TO LIVE THE LIFE OF YOUR DREAMS! The next time you are watching some rich, famous celebrity, business person or someone that you believe has it all, and you are thinking how lucky they are, remember this: they’re not. They had something that they passionately believed, they cultivated that dream, they were willing to go for it, and they worked their ass off to get where they are. It’s not luck, it’s a passionate belief coupled with massive action. 1 + 1 = 2. It’s that simple. You might be saying “but Rob, I’ve been working hard toward my dreams, and it still hasn’t happened yet.” My first response would be, “have you really?” “How hard?” “How consistently hard have you really worked?” I know in my life when things fall short, I only have myself to blame and if I closely examine why something isn’t working out, I need look no further than the mirror to figure it out. I’m not saying that extraneous circumstances can’t come into play and screw things up. They can. God knows that I’ve had more than my share but I had to move on, pick up the pieces and start kicking some ass again because nobody else was going to do it for me. Guess what it was that made me pick myself up, dust myself off and keep charging on? My passionate desires, plain and simple.
I have spent much of my 15 years in practice coaching and consulting with other doctors to teach them how to have better patient outcomes and how to run better practices. The number one problem I see in anyone that is having a hard time is fear. Fear comes as a result from waffling in what your desires and passions are, because when you believe passionately in something, there is no fear. What I have found in the people I have coached in fact is that they don’t have passionate desires, they have wishes, and wishes will get you nowhere.
Example. “I wish I had a million dollars.” Good luck with that. “I wish I had better health.” Yet you don’t eat well, don’t exercise and just keep taking different kind of drugs and having different procedures that your insurance will pay for to get you healthy. Good luck with that. “I wish my kids would behave better.” But you don’t take the time and energy to discipline them and teach them. Good luck with that one too, and oh just you wait until they become teenagers. Are you starting to get the point? A wish is nothing more than a wish. If you don’t believe passionately in something, you will never have the energy or persistence that it takes to achieve your goals and will wind up five years from now still wishing. Don’t do that!!!!! Don’t be sitting here five years from now still wishing your ship will come in. Build your own ship and launch the damned thing!!!
My passionate desire is clear, and as I said earlier, crystal clear. I want to be one of the top personal development authors and speakers on planet earth in the next five years. If you are reading this right now, you watch and see if it happens. I guarantee you it will. I want you to be reading my books, coming to hear me speak and watching your life transform as a result of it, the way my life has transformed from reading and listening to Anthony Robbins, Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Brian Tracy and Mark Victor Hansen. So let it be written, so let it be done. Please put today’s lesson into action. Define what it is that you passionately believe in, for if you do, you will create it. Have a great one.
Numerous times throughout my career, my wife and I have referred to practice being a roller coaster ride. Ups and downs, twists and turns, frightening moments, high peaks, sudden drops, exhilarating thrills and quick changes in direction!
To be successful in practice, you should have more days at the office when it feels like a thrill ride vs. the amount of days where it makes you sick.
The Real Roller Coaster
I recently had a conversation with a patient of mine who is a retired attorney that had an awesome career. He and his wife now live an incredible life. On this particular day he was waiting for his wife to finish up her treatment and he was looking around my office. Patients were everywhere. We had people in all different areas of the practice. My patient says to me “looks like business is good.” I replied that I was blessed and yes indeed business is good.
He then said, “It reminds me of when I was in practice. Sometimes I would be so busy that I would be thinking to myself that I wished it would slow down, and then when things were slow I would be wishing that business would pick up. It was a real roller coaster!”
I found it funny that we were from two different fields of practice, yet we both held this view of a roller coaster.
Interesting how things work out sometimes! The only difference might be that I rarely wished for my business to slow down, for I know that what you think about is what you get.
Is Your Roller Coaster a Thrill or Sickening?
Certain predictable things must take place to make sure you have more “thrill ride” days than days that make you sick.
Great practices don’t happen by chance or by good luck…they come as a result of:
- proper training
- systems that work
- the right strategies
- ALWAYS having your headspace squared away.
So if you ever find yourself lamenting the guy or the gal down the street who is absolutely killing it, ask yourself what are they doing that you are not.
I have watched numerous friends and colleagues over the years continuously searching for the right formula while their practices and finances suffer. Many of them would call me for advice and I would recommend certain trainings that I felt they needed to attend, which I was confident would help them receive the appropriate training needed for success. Most of time my advice fell on deaf ears and now many of those docs are out of business.
I know the excuses too…all of them. I have been coaching people long enough to know them inside and out and backwards.
- I can’t make it that weekend because…
- I can’t afford it…
- It’s just like all the other trainings…
- I shouldn’t have to get coaching
- I am a doctor…blah, blah, blah!
The bottom line is this: the most successful doctors in our profession ALL get coaching on how to train themselves to be successful.
In the last fifteen years, I have developed systems in my practice that have worked, and continue to work this day. My systems are ever evolving.
The things I was doing ten years ago that I thought would always remain constant are old hat now— collecting dust. I watch too many doctors continue to struggle doing the same old stuff. Having up to date systems is paramount to running a tight practice.
Of all the things necessary for your own thrill ride life and to experience your dream practice, having great headspace is at the top of the list.
We all come across those people who just seem to always have it together and be sickeningly happy. You know what I mean.
Guess what? That doesn’t happen by chance.
The secret to having your headspace straight is made up of simple little steps that aren’t a secret at all. However, too few people will ever take the time to learn and more importantly apply them to their life.
But boy, once you do, look out world, you will be unstoppable!
Tomorrow when you walk into your office, will you be stepping onto the most exciting thrill ride of your life?
Or will be getting onto a ride that will make you sick?
The choice is yours.
Once you have decided which roller coaster you want to ride, start taking action daily toward proper training, initiating systems that work, developing proven strategies and keeping your headspace where it needs to be.
You will then surely be on your way to establishing your dream practice and life.
